Just putting it out there…
Have Laptop, Will Travel
Being a digital nomad is the holy grail of work-travel gigs, though you have to be quite creative and flexible to get online in developing countries, it can be done and its so worth it! It’s a long-term gig. You dont have to do any grotty work for board and lodging.
In my experience developing countries are the most interesting of all and are guaranteed to fill you with culture shock and awe, but nothing is reliable in that environment especially not technology. However I even managed to get online while living in the jungle on the side of a volcano during the rainy season via solar power and horribly unreliable satellite. My laptop got fried by the dodgy electrics out there and major humidity from the lack of having a space to live and work in that had actual walls (I lived out of a hammock).
Usually the moment I set foot on new land I start asking around where the internet cafe’s are, which hostels have wifi, if I’m in an area without internet, how I can get my hands on a usb stick. The connection does go up and down in these sorts of countries (along with the electricity) so you need to allow a day or two padding for projects and go off to have a swim instead. Those are the drawbacks, but what makes it really worth it is its relatively easy to earn more online than you will spend to live and travel in these countries. Also, depending on your standard of living (mine is very low) you can even get away with working one or two days a week (if that, I work a couple of hours about twice a week when I’m in a developing country).
I work while I travel, both work and perpetual travel are ongoing for years now, and I highly recommend this way of doing it. You could also work inbetween travel to save up in advance but that requires more financial planning and less spontaneity. I really couldnt be worse at financial planning since its so boring and tends to make me less spontaneous and a bit panicky about moving on if I havent reached my goal amount. I love to have an idea of where I’d like to travel in the next month but since I work on the fly as I need the cash, I have the luxury of changing my mind and going somewhere else at the last minute which has happened a few times.
Btw, I invoice clients through PayPal and Google Checkout, then transfer the money into my VISA or Mastercards (I always have a stash that I keep in separate places and countries in case one gets lost or stolen) and just draw the cash from ATMs (when they are available in the area… sometimes you will need to travel far) which works out so conveniently and better than travellers cheques or carrying all my cash for the entire trip around with me.
If youre a full-time traveller or want to be and are looking for ideas of the things you and your laptop could do together while you travel, here’s a GREAT list to chew over:

Goddess Oceana on Tantric Love
When I personally think of Tantric sex I think of a deep intimate connection on a spiritual level that really shifts and moves. It’s a healing experience, and it’s not just during intercourse or a sexual act — it’s all the time.
Are you seeing yourself in your partner? Subconsciously we don’t choose our partners because we’ll live happily ever after — because we dont — who does? We keep seeing magazine articles: “Live happily ever after” or “Make it all better” or “What’s wrong with your relationship”, well it’s not. When something’s “wrong” with your relationship it’s SO right, because thats where you break open your soul. Thats where you let go of the triggers of the old wounds. Thats the gift that that person brings to you.
So being able to commit in such a way and intentionally with another person throughout all of your life, not just in the moment, or for a few months or just while youre having sex, or just when you’re getting along, but always committing to taking it higher on a spiritual level, to really looking at yourself, to being willing to be so vulnerable… really its a crucible… the ultimate playground for transformation. And that extends into the bedroom.”

Just for Now, without asking how, let yourself sink into stillness. Just for now, lay down the weight you so patiently bear upon your shoulders. Feel the earth receive you, and the infinite expanse of the sky grow even wider as your awareness reaches up to meet it. Just for now, allow a wave of breath to enliven your experience. Breathe out whatever blocks you from the truth. Just for now, be boundless, free, with awakened energy tingling in your hands and feet. Drink in the possibility of being who and what you really are – so fully alive that the world looks different, newly born and vibrant, just for now.

Wow! Reconsidering the pursuit of US Citizenship and everything!!!
On the eve of the big tax day in the USA I’m finding myself rethinking this fanciful second passport idea. Its a strange idea that popped into my head as a teenager that it would be useful to have a bunch of shiny passports to wave at passport control and not be stuck with the travel limitations of my African one, and that having multiple countries to choose from would free me. South Africa is pretty far away from the rest of the world so growing up here a lot of South Africans cant wait to get out and see the world. But its expensive to fly out and few first world countries will have you for very long. To hold an EU or US passport symbolised freedom. This idea, this dream is now completely out of date with the realities of whats going on in the ever crumbling first world. (more…)
Loving Cup

Anyone who is in love is making love the whole time, even when they’re not. When two bodies meet, it is just the cup overflowing. They can stay together for hours, even days. They begin the dance one day and finish it the next, or–such is the pleasure they experience–they may never finish it. No eleven minutes for them.
― Paulo Coelho, Eleven Minutes
Cape to Rio, the next big adventure?
By the way, I’ve been in Cape Town for about a month. Its ludicrously beautiful, sunny and laid back out here. Sorry I haven’t been updating its just been a bit distracting.
Anyway, every day, looking out on this view while sipping cup after cup of tea I’ve been dreaming more and more about being on one of these boats. The only boat experience I’ve ever had is being a passenger, and the idea always seemed a bit of an unreachable aspiration as I’ll never want to work so hard to earn enough to hang out with the hoitiest of the toity yachting crowd. So it doesn’t help that my step-dad Jeremy — who I spend a huge amount of time hiking the mountain and generally nattering with — also loves to talk about every conceivable adventure and the people who have tested themselves to the limits in the name of adventure. We’ve also been passing stories of the dreaded “yachty botty” and other sailing lurgies, one where the only two crewmen fell out with each other right at the start of a grueling year-long expedition and didnt speak for the rest of the trip or say goodbye when they disembarked, just stormed off in opposite directions never to see each other again; solo round the world trips and all sorts of exciting things. I hadn’t noticed but for a month these ideas have been creeping in, and then yesterday during a chat it dawned on me FOR THE FIRST TIME that you dont have to be stinking rich to go on a yachting adventure, just laid back, have a flexible lifestyle, and willing to do the grunt work.
WOW! “Cape to Rio!!”, my brain shouted at me. I remember sitting so glum in the dark assembly hall at school in the mornings hearing the headmistress talk about this student, much younger than me, who was given yet more time off school to sail the Cape to Rio with her parents, and other sailing adventures all the time. Of course the school pinned her achievements to their name. She had escaped the drudging pitiful life of poverty and homework that didn’t end till 1am I was lumped with. How I longed to be her and to have her parents!! It turns out I could be me and still do it! So yesterday a huge childhood dream came alive in me again and now I cant sleep because I’m beyond excited! The only thing that can stop me is not being selected for the race, but knowing my ridiculous luck that’s not going to be a problem.
The total length of the race is around 3,600 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. After leaving Cape Town, participants head north-west towards the island of Ilha Trindade, and south-west from there towards South America. As they near the coast, skippers need to decide whether to take the longer route with stronger winds, or a more direct route with the chance for lighter winds.
– wikipedia
Right now my heart is set on doing the next South Atlantic Race / Cape To Rio in 2014, which is just around the corner, but also gives me just the right amount of time to do the various intensive skipper courses at the False Bay School of Yachting, possibly all the way through to Offshore Yacht Master, and volunteer in a few local races so that I can hopefully stand a chance of being selected for the big race. I plan to come out to SA a few times to get as much training in as possible. If the Cape to Rio falls through Im sure I will find something else equally amazing to do, and maybe by the time I have a some experience under my belt I will want to do a totally different race, but I have a feeling that this is the one, and it will be the big start. I have always dreamed of doing a solo world expedition, so this could be just the beginning.
Boy have I missed living by the ocean! I’m so happy out here :)
Why I admire Strength. Not Power.
I recently walked away from a long-standing situation that made me feel powerful sometimes, and other times left me miserable without it. The people who shared the other side of the power see-saw with me now have it all to themselves. The next day I woke up after the first good night’s rest in forever and realised… each time I choose to give up power and control over something, I actually grow in strength. (more…)
The Sun Rises Again

Question: How can you trick your mind into getting rid of a bad habit?
Sri Gurudev: How can you trick your baby so you can take away something that would hurt it? Suppose the baby is playing with something sharp. What kind of trick would you use? You would give her something nice to distract her.
In the same way, find some nice, positive habits. Present them to the mind. Admire them. “Oh, look how terrific this habit is. So useful. Something to be proud of.” Certainly your little baby mind will jump to grab it. As soon as it jumps for the good habit, take away the bad one.
If you want to be rid of bad company, what should you do? Just get into good company; the bad company will automatically stay away. It’s simple. You won’t be available to the bad people because you will always be mingling with good people. That’s a very good beginning toward a very high goal. Sri Patanjali calls it pratipaksha bhavanam – substituting positive thoughts for negative ones. Think of the opposite, develop the opposite. If you have hatred, develop love. That is the trick. You cannot simply beat a bad habit to get rid of it. That’s like being in a dark room and beating the darkness, telling it to get out. Instead, just bring in a candle. Without even saying goodbye, the darkness will run away.

Sex is a felt experience, not a rational one
Wow! What an INCREDIBLE writer and a penetrating (adult) read:
Sex: Not For the Faint of Heart
“…Sex is the most volatile arena for exploring who you are in the world and what you are running away from will typically arise in sex — quickly and in obvious contrast to everything you think you are.”

The Great Elephant

The Great Elephant – The world’s largest mechanical animal. It can carry up to 49 passengers at a time for a 45 minute walk. Built in France as part of the Machines of the Isle of Nantes, an art and culture show full of dream and fantasy. 12 meter high x 8 meter wide the mechanical elephant was cobbled together using 45 tons of reclaimed wood and steel. I’m not sure what fuel it uses but smoke comes out of its trunk.
I would love to LIVE in it!

“There is one great truth on this planet: Whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really WANT something it’s because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. It’s your mission on earth.”
How wonderful to get a chance after so many years to read this book again in the form of a free audiobook…

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil
The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
